Rotisserie Chicken in the CrockPot Recipe

Yay!  I picked up my first locally raised pastured chicken of the season this weekend.  If you’ve ever watched Food, inc. or read Nourishing Traditions, you know why this is important to me.  If you haven’t checked out these two resources, you should!

Cooking these birds in the CrockPot produces tender, moist, fall off the bone chicken.  This is my favorite recipe for whole chicken.  It also makes the best stock, so save your bones!  You can read how to make chicken stock here.

Ingredients:

  • 4 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Thyme
  • 1 tsp White Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1-2 Onions, chopped (optional)
  • 6-8 Yellow Potatoes (optional)

Instructions:

1.  Combine spices in a small bowl.

2.  If necessary, remove giblets from inside of chicken.  Rinse inside and outside of chicken and pat dry with paper towels.

3.  Massage chicken with spice mixture.

4.  Place onions and potatoes in the bottom of the CrockPot and lay the chicken on top.  I usually put some onions inside the chicken too.

5.  Cover and cook on low 4-6 hours or until chicken is falling off the bone.

The original recipe found at food.com recommends rubbing the spices on the chicken the night before you plan to cook it.  I am never that organized and I think it is awesome without that step.

UPDATE:  Be sure to check out this post on How to Have Crispy Skin in the Crockpot.  I haven’t tried it on this particular recipe but I’m sure it would work.

Here are some of my favorite crockpot whole chicken recipes for the crockpot:

This sounds like something I will cook a LOT thru the long, hot summertime.
As old as I am (and I am VERY olden), you would think that I would have thought to cook a whole chicken in the crockpot…but I never thought of it. WONDERFUL recipe. Thanks…
I am going to follow on FB.

  2. Laurie says:

WOW – that looks delicious! (And it’s a great picture) 🙂 I’ve got a chicken in the freezer I need to thaw out to try this tomorrow (you’ve seen my crockpot recipe – yummy, but not nearly as pretty!)

  3. Suzanne says:

Do you think this would work with bone-in skin-on split chicken breasts? I don’t have a whole chicken right now, but I do have plenty of those! Looks delicious!

    • Nancy says:

It wouldn’t hurt to try it. The seasoning would be a bit much for skinless chicken but I think it would be good with split breasts. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!

  4. This is a great recipe! I tried to make something like this, but the chicken was dry. I think I had the Crock Pot on too high! Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Nancy,
Your chicken looks beautiful! I love the combination of seasons in the recipe. I can almost smell this as it is cooing. Thanks for sharing with Full Plate Thursday and come back soon!

I made this for dinner last night and it was a big hit. I especially loved the potatoes. I make chicken in the crock pot all the time, but cooking the chicken this way made it really tasty. I think the veggies on the bottom keep the chicken from “boiling” in its own juices, and it “roasts” instead. I used the leftover chicken for chicken salad today for lunch. Yum!

  12. YUM! This looks fantastic. I adore crock pot recipes. Thanks for linking up to Friday Potluck.

  14. Sonia says:

This looks amazing! I’ve never cooked chicken, and to cook it in a crockpot!?! Wow! I bet it was “fall off the bone” moist and gooood! 🙂 Thanks for bringing this to Sugar Free Sunday!

  15. Yum, this is exactly how I do roast chicken in the crock-pot. I would also recommend rubbing butter under the skin around the breast. This will keep the white meat from drying out before the dark meat is done. We only cook whole chickens on our farm and I always looking for new and exciting recipes. Thank you for sharing!

    • Nancy says:

Mmmm. Butter sounds delish but we can’t do dairy. Maybe next time I’ll try palm shortening or Earth Balance.

  16. So glad you shared your recipe in this week’s Mingle Monday! There is nothing like a good ole roasted chicken! YUM!!!

  17. Terry says:

I am pregnant and this immediately started my cravings. I stopped by Ingles on the way home from picking up my son from preschool and got a tyson chicken on managers special. It is cooking in the crockpot now. I can’t wait to have it for dinner.

  18. Sarah says:

We do something similar, but add carrots at the bottom of the pot too, so no extra sides needed. :o)

  30. Joy says:

Is it supposed to be spicy or did I mess something up? I made it for a 4 pound chicken and it burnt my mouth….I’m wondering if maybe I made a mistake…

    • Nancy says:

Hi Joy, I am known as the family wimp when it comes to spicyness and I don’t think it’s spicy. Do you think maybe you added too much cayenne?

      • Joy says:

my guess is that I mixed up my paprika and chili powder since their containers are pretty much identical. I’ll have to try it again sometime and be more conscientious about which containers I grab.

  31. Love slow cooker recipes!! I do many chickens in one and I always need new ideas to spice things up a little!!

  32. Just had this for dinner…AMAZING!! I loved how easy it was, and how flavorful. I used smoked paprika which lent a nice flavor profile, and stuffed the cavity with part of the onions. SO good, I will be making versions of this in the future, to be sure, thank you Nancy!!

    • Nancy says:

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I had not noticed that there was smoked paprika and regular paprika. You learn something new everyday! I’ll have to see which one I have.

    Hi Nancy,

I’m at home and don’t want to run to the store yet again. I’ve got my whole chicken and am ready to fire up the crockpot. I have tarragon, dill weed, and poultry seasoning, but no thyme! What should I do??! What’s the best substitute for thyme?

    Thank you so much!

  36. Randi says:

This was AMAZING! My boyfriend went for a third helping because he loved it so much. Will definitely be a staple dinner in our home. I also used your tips to make chicken stock for the first time, and it came out great and I made some great soup with it. I’ll only make homemade stock from now on!
